1. Simon & Garfunkel- The Sound of Silence (2 weeks)
There is a certain scary as hell quality to this song which kept me away from it as a youngster. Nowadays, I embrace scary as hell in my loving arms and ears. A-
2. The Beatles- We Can Work It Out (3 weeks)
Nice uplifting McCartney part, followed by desperate waltzy warning from Lennon. Damnit, even on their lesser tracks, these guys were magic together. B+
3. Petula Clark- My Love (2 weeks)
A relentlessly happy over-orchestrated love song. Almost TOO happy. B
4. Lou Christie- Lightnin' Strikes (1 week)
Silly teen pop with a Frankie Valli-esque chorus which annoys me. C
5. Nancy Sinatra- These Boots Are Made For Walkin' (1 week)
JESUS FUCK THIS SONG IS SEXY! I like. A-
6. SSgt Barry Sadler- The Ballad of the Green Berets (5 weeks)
Back in the day before patriotism was usurped by the douchebags in our nation... this was an excellent song honoring our finest and bravest. B+
7. The Righteous Brothers- (You're My) Soul and Inspiration (3 weeks)
This song attempts to replicate the over the top Wall of Sound production of their stuff with Phil Spector, and somehow, it feels like overkill, whereas Spector's work never did. Good song, just a bit too much going on. I feel motion sickness from this one. B
8. The Young Rascals- Good Lovin' (1 week)
Great uptempo rocker with lyrics detailing sex as the cure for everything. Amen, rascals. A
9. The Mamas and The Papas- Monday, Monday (3 weeks)
This song is purposely dull, because it's about MONDAY. Nice harmonies throughout. B+
10. Percy Sledge- When a Man Loves a Woman (2 weeks)
Ahh yes, I remember slow dancing with my prom date Judy to this one and thinking life could never get better...then I wore out the vinyl on the 45 after I caught her getting fingerbanged by Ted the Quarterback at the drive-in. Ok, none of this happened. I was born in 1975. But this song is perfect for both falling in love AND breaking your heart and stomping on it until it is a bloody lump of nothing. A
11. The Rolling Stones- Paint It, Black (2 weeks)
Personal note: THIS is the first song I ever sang in front of an audience. It was at a 1992 high school talent show with my band, VYI (Vaginal Yeast Infection). End of personal note. The sitar is sinister and twisted, and the choruses are beautifully angst driven. These boys sound dangerous as all hell. Still not sure why they had to get all racist with the comma in the title. A
12. The Beatles- Paperback Writer (1 week)
I HATE the first few seconds of this song, but I dig the fuzzed out guitar and the lyrics. Pretty good, but this is the Beatles we're talking about, and they did much, much better hundreds of times. B
